Why is there such a lack of empathy among Americans these days?

Some of the answers I get and see other people get on this site lack common sense and show no empathy or understanding of the person's side. Rudeness is the rule, not the exception. Even psychologists say empathy has gone down 40% ( I have no idea how they measure the percentage, but thats what they say. Why do you think this is?
