Was he just being nice to me?

Ok so a friend of mine who I told that I liked him but ok with being friends since he was seeing someone sometimes texted me back. Before I told him I liked him, he replied back to a majority of my texts then after I told him, he still responded back but I want to know if it was out of politeness or cuz we're friends. Also, sometimes he laughed in the texts a lot even when I didn't say anything funny before and after I told him. So after a couple weeks that I told him, I texted him again and said that he still has to do the stuff he said he'd do at least by my birthday. He said "Haha sure". I highly doubt he'll actually do it but did he really say that just to be nice since he sorta rejected me. I haven't texted him for 2 weeks now since I want to keep my distance and get over him but still stay friends.
