Are aliens capable of possessing greater empathy then humans?

I always wondered with us humans being so primitive, violent and just plain corrupt could aliens out there in the galaxy be more evolved then us in terms of empathy. Could aliens be creatures that have a greater compassion to other living compared to us humans who sometimes give into our animal instinct.
