Is it still polite to bow in japan?

I am planning on going to Japan. I read it is still normal to bow to people in Japan, as a sign of greeting, respect, thanks, etc. However, I have been drilled in from childhood that it is impolite to do something based on a persona ethnicity. Common american...politeness. So would I be considered racist if I bowed in Japan?
