I was taught politeness and I feel like that has hindered me socially.?

I have this problem all the time, too! I'm in a group, but I'm really quiet because I'm waiting for someone to stop talking. And when they finally do, I'm about to speak, and someone else beats me to it. I feel really awkward and I feel like they're thinking, "Why is she just standing there?"
